 1. Legal bases and purposes of the processing operations

At the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, Belgium made a number of commitments on this theme. The federal programme-based public service Sustainable Development was established to fulfil these commitments.

In 2014, the service was transformed into the Federal Institute for Sustainable Development (FISD). The aim of this organisational change was to strengthen federal policy on sustainable development by embedding sustainable development in the government's core policy. The FISD is the federal public service that assists the Belgian federal government in preparing sustainable development policy. It is also responsible for coordinating and implementing this policy. The FISD stands for Motivation, Integration and Innovation. We do not shy away from challenges, we seek sustainable solutions through a cross-cutting approach and we want to bring about change with innovative ideas. The four strategic objectives of the FISD:

  • To be the driving force behind sustainable development policy in Belgium.
  • To be recognised as a reference in Belgium in terms of policy supporting social responsibility.
  • To be the vector for the integration of the federal strategy (short, medium and long term) on sustainable development in all policy sectors.
  • To integrate sustainable development into the internal management of FISD.
