Sustainable consumption

Sustainable consumption plays a crucial role in creating a socially, environmentally and economically balanced society. The Federal Institute for Sustainable Development (FISD) and the federal authorities are actively committed to encouraging and supporting sustainable choices in the procurement of products, services and works.

Through concrete initiatives such as policies and instruments for sustainable public procurement, the FISD encourages public buyers to make responsible purchases, with an emphasis on environmental, circular and social criteria.

In addition, the FISD offers a comprehensive online database of sustainability labels, designed to help a wider group of consumers and organisations better understand sustainability labels and take informed decisions.

Through these initiatives, the FISD aims to accelerate the transition to more sustainable consumption and encourage everyone to contribute to SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production.

As major consumers, public authorities themselves have a role to play in setting an example to encourage the choice of responsible products and services. SDG 12.7 explicitly highlights the role of public authorities in promoting sustainable practices, in line with national policies and priorities.
